BHAVESH SANYAL

(1902 - 2003) Born in Assam in 1902, Sanyal studied at the Serampore College, Bengal. Later, he obtained a Diploma from the Government College of Art and Crafts, Calcutta, where he studied sculpture and painting. He worked as a teacher at the Mayo School of Art in Lahore after graduation and the Delhi Polytechnic between the years of 1953 and 1960. From 1960 onwards, for a period of eight years, he held the position of Secretary of the Lalit Kala Academi. He has exhibited widely both in India and abroad. He was a participant at the Salon de Mai, Paris in 1949, the Tokyo International Arts Exhibition in 1961 and Wounds, Centre of International Modern Art, Calcutta and National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi. He represented India at the Biennales of Venice ,1953; and Sao Paulo ,1961. He was awarded the Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian honour in India, in 1984. The artist passed away on 9 January, 2003 in New Delhi.
