TYEB MEHTA

(1925 - 2009) Tyeb Mehta was born in Gujarat and studied at the Sir J. J. School of Art, Mumbai. He was awarded the J. D. Rockefeller III Fund Fellowship in 1968. Some of his solo exhibitions include those at Vadehra Art Gallery, New Delhi, in 2011, 1998 and 1996; Art Heritage, New Delhi, in 1990; Gallery Chemould, Mumbai in 1990, 1986, 1984, 1976, 1971, 1968 and 1956; Gallery One and Bear Lane Gallery, London, in 1962; and Gallery 59, Mumbai in 1959. His works have also been featured in exhibitions at the Art Dubai 2012, San Jose Museum of Art, 2011; Grosvenor Gallery, London, 2010; the Museum of Fine Art, Boston, in 2009; Saffronart and Pundole Art Gallery, New York in 2001; the Tate Modern London, in 2001: the Singapore Art Museum in 1997; Grey Art Gallery, New York, in 1985; and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford, in 1982. Mehta was conferred with the Padma Bhushan by the Government of India in 2007. He also received the Dayawati Modi Award in 2005, the Gold Medal from the President of India on the occasion of Lalit Kala Akademi’s Golden Jubilee Celebration in 2004, the Kalidas Samman from the Madhya Pradesh State Government in 1988, and the Prix Nationale in Cagnes sur Mer in 1974. Tyeb Mehta lived and worked in Mumbai, till he passed away in 2009.
